Salem State student Julia Gauthier passed away on March 21. Gauthier was a 19-year-old freshman originally from Salem.

Gauthier was in a car being driven by an allegedly drunk driver. She had been awarded the John and Abigail Adams Scholarship, which is given to students who have demonstrated excellent scores on their MCAS tests.

Gauthier's professors have lauded her performance and how well she had adapted to college life.

The Salem News reported that Gauthier was a phenomenal athlete in high school, playing both lacrosse and field hockey, and was a "driving force" for establishing an outside classroom designed to resemble an amphitheater.

According to Dr. Patricia Maguire Meservey, Salem State president, Gauthier's mother, Marie Gauthier, announced that Seaport Credit Union has created a scholarship fund in Julia's name. The scholarship will go to deserving Salem High School students who attend Salem State.

Gauthier's funeral was on March 31.
