American President Donald Trump has called for a major investigation into voter fraud.

During the election he claimed that millions of illegal votes were cast.  He was unable to provide evidence for the fraud.

In a series of tweets he wrote, “I will be asking for a major investigation into VOTER FRAUD, including those registered to vote in two states, those who are illegal and … even, those registered to vote who are dead (and many for a long time). Depending on results, we will strengthen up voting procedures!”

According to two sources at Monday night meeting with congressional leaders he reiterated his claim that between 3 to 5 million illegal votes cost him the popular vote.

The claim has met with widespread criticism in both the Democratic and Republican Parties.  The Democratic Party has pointed out that whenever the Republican Party has tried to stop voter fraud all they have done is stop perfectly legitimate voters from voting.  In the main, they would have voted Democrat.

John Husted, a Republican tweeted that in Ohio they already have a voting review and the state-wide review for last year is already underway.

While Debbie-Wasserman Schultz called the investigation deeply disturbing.  She said he seemed to have a penchant for lying from small things such as inauguration crowd size to bigger things such as voter fraud.  She went on to question if he would lie about casualties should America be involved in another conflict.

During a press conference Sean Spicer, the president’s press secretary did not cite studies specifically on why Trump is convinced voter fraud is prevalent.  A Jesse Richman and David Earnest study in 2014 found 14% of non-citizens, people living in America without American nationality indicated they were registered to vote.  Only American citizens can vote in an election.

A number of other studies have not found evidence of voter fraud.
