Mariah Carey, pop diva, has stormed off stage amid New York’s New Year celebrations in Times Square.  The singer appeared to lose it when the wrong lip-sync track played in her opening number.  She then stormed around the stage asking for monitors to be switched on.

She did try to rescue the set by dancing briefly, and tried to coax the crowd into singing one of her numbers, saying, ‘I’m trying to be a good sport here.’

“We didn’t have a check for this song… we’re missing some of the vocals, but it is what it is. I’m just going to let the audience sing. We didn’t have a sound check for this New Year’s baby, it is what it is.

“Get these monitors on please.”

After the second song which like the first did not go to plan, she appeared to give up and say, “I wanted a holiday too, can’t I just have one?”  At that point she left the stage.

Carey had been booked to headline guest for ABC’s Dick Clark’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest and was to herald the start of 2017 as the Waterfall Crystal dropped at midnight.

The producers of the show were concerned she may not show up at all as she seemed to be unaware what time the bomb traditionally drops.  As such, they assigned a whole crew to Carey to ensure she arrived on time, dedicating an apartment so she could get ready and take the stage.

Earlier the singer had to be carried on stage by her boyfriend and dancer, Bryan Tanaka.

After Carey left the stage, host Ryan Seacrest said, “Mariah Carey there, on our stage. No matter what Mariah does, the crowd absolutely loves it.”

Despite Carey-gate, the celebrations are believed to have been attended by over a million people and have been deemed a success.
