Current premier league title holders Leicester were soundly beaten 3-nil by Southampton.

Interestingly, in the same fixture last season Leicester dug deep and earned a well earned draw.  It was clear from today’s performance that history was not going to repeat itself.

It is perhaps a measure of the difference in performance levels of Leicester City from last season to the current one, that Vardy who was menacing backlines and becoming a leading goal scorer, is now forced to feed off scraps from a team that looks like a pale imitation of its former self.

Southampton on the other hand put in a performance that fully deserved the win.  Goals from James Ward – Prowse, Jay Rodriguez, and a late Dusan Tadic penalty sealing the victory.

Leicester City Eyes the Relegation Zone

Anyone associated with Leicester City must be looking at the relegation zone.  They are only five points away from being in the bottom three, and Swansea’s shock win at Liverpool must make your ardent Leicester City supporter nervous.  They have conceded more goals this season than they had for their entire campaign last season.  The only hope to salvage something this season is the next instalment of their Champions League campaign.

The pressure is growing on manager Claudio Ranieri.

Southampton Return to Form

Southampton will celebrate this match as a return to form.  Much of the season has seen the Saints struggle to find fluency and create chances.  Today they did that, winning resoundingly finding fluency and rhythm in attack.  It must feel good if you’re a Southampton fan to win after four straight league defeats.

The only downside to the win was the injury to Virgil Van Dijk, the star of Southampton’s defence this season.

Should this injury prove long-term, this could cause problems going forward especially as defender Jose  Fonte has transferred to West Ham.

Nonetheless, Southampton’s win was fully deserved.
