How to Celebrate 21 in Boston

As teenagers we all look forward to turning 18 because we are finally considered adults. If you’re a smoker, you are legally able to purchase cigarettes. The next few years that follow are practically meaningless until the big 21. You only get one chance to celebrate your 21st birthday so you have to make sure you do it right. There isn’t really another birthday to look forward to, except maybe your 50th.  Here are a few ideas on ways to make sure you have the 21st birthday that you deserve.

If you want to make it an all day affair then take the bus down to either Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods. The Mohegan Sun Tour leaves from several places close to Salem including the Lynnway, Malden, and Boston. Each passenger is given a $30 bonus towards their bets and a $15 dining certificate.  The bus itself cost around $15 and takes approximately two hours to get to both casinos. The Foxwoods bus from Chinatown cost the same as the Mohegan Sun Tour. It’s cheap, fun, and you get free drinks all day while you gamble. There are plenty of buses running back and forth so you can leave at any time and head back to Boston to enjoy the nightlife.

Want to go the more expensive route but safer then find a local meeting place and take a party bus to Boston? Buses usually hold 25-30 passengers and cost approximately $900. Most companies will have a few bars they have connections with so you will not have to pay a cover charge or wait in line. A few good things about party buses are you don’t have to drive, you get to drink for free on the bus, and you get to go to a few bars rather than just staying at one all night.

“I got a party bus for my 21st birthday. It ended up being about $30 a person but it was well worth it,” said Maggie McCue of Malden, “I didn’t have to worry about my friends driving drunk and it was a helpful way to keep everyone together while going from one bar to another.”

Okay so maybe not every one of your friends is 21 but you would really like them to be there for this momentous occasion then the place to go is Jillian’s located next to Fenway Park. Jillian’s is 18+ establishment that has a 21+ club called Tequila Rain on the first floor, 70,000 square feet of entertainment, including pool tables, on the second, and the Lucky Strike bowling alley on the third floor. It’s a nice place to relax and party the night away with all of your friends.

Boston gives you plenty of options. You can do a bar crawl down Boylston street which has classics like Whiskeys, Pour House, Vox and The Foggy Goggle. Or you can go to Faneuil Hall, which has places like Ned Devine’s, McFadden’s, Trinity, Sissy K’s, Purple Shamrock, and Hong Kong. Many of them have low prices such as $1.50 drafts at Sissy K’s. These bars are all within walking distance of each other and tend to have good crowds. Try to get there before 10, because that is when they start charging a cover fee.

If you are looking for something a little more fancy and upscale try Felt, Suite, RumoR, The Estate, or Venu. A few other bars you could check out if you like to dance are The Greatest Bar, Revolution Rockbar, or The Harp. These places tend to have dress codes that include no hats or head gear, no t-shirts, no ripped clothing, sports wear, sneakers or work boots.
Boston is a very diverse city, with many neighborhoods and different kinds of bars and pubs to offer. It is a great place to go and enjoy the nightlife. One of the best things about Boston is that it is easily accessible by train, bus, or car. No matter what type of bar you like, Boston and its surrounding cities - such as, South Boston, Allston, and Brighton – is the place to go on your 21st.

Paul Caira of Medford remembers his 21st as if it were yesterday. “For my 21st we went to Brighton Center and it was a blast. If you're looking for the local flavor and a real Irish pub atmosphere then it's the place to be. We went to Porter Belly's, The Green Briar and Irish Village. Then finished the night at Smokin Joes which is a blues bar and Brighton Beer Gardens, a great sports bar.”

The main thing is to drink responsibly - make sure you have a designated driver – and, of course, have fun!
