Viewers have taken to social media to slam Donald Trump and Melania’s first dance as President and First Lady. The couple took to the stage to sway to Frank Sinatra’s I Did It My Way but commentators said that the pair looked awkward.
Many compared it to a couple dancing at a high school formal. The couple arrived for the Liberty Ball at the Washington Convention Center and began the event with their dance. While both swayed to the music, they broke off at various points during the track to wave to the assembled crowd, while President Trump began to fist bump during the dance.
After the first part of the song, the pair were then joined on stage by Vice President Pence and Second Lady Karen Pence, while the whole family then got up with them. Twitter users joked that the couple had looked as if they were at high school. One, Annette Gagnot joked: “Thumbs Up-ing your buddies because you finally got the hot chick to slow dance with you at the middle school dance.” Meanwhile, Naomi Belay added: “Have you ever watched an inappropriate movie with your parents and felt super uncomfortable? That’s how I feel watching Trump dance.”
Even the choice of track proved to be a controversial choice. Nancy Sinatra tweeted that the first line of the song went: “And now, the end is near”. However, while they may have been criticised for their dancing technique, Melania was praised for her fashion choices. Melania, 46, wore an ivory, off-shoulder dress that she had helped to design, along with designer Herve Pierre. The dress featured a column style with a red ribbon at the waist. Following her dance with her husband, she danced with US Army Staff Sergeant Jose A Medina. Meanwhile, President Trump’s daughter Ivanka had a princess moment in a glittering gown, while dancing with her husband Jared Kushner.
