Singing superstar Adele has bravely opened her heart to talk about coping with depression.
Adele, who usually keeps her private life very private, has said she felt compelled to speak out to assure others suffering from the condition.
She says her experience with the condition has now left her fearful of having another child.
Her comments come just a few days after Adele announced her engagement to her partner of five years, Simon Konecki, and the father of her son, Angelo, now four.
On plans to have another baby, Adele said she did not think it would be on the cards.
She said: “I’m too scared. I had really bad postpartum depression after I had my son, and it frightened me. I didn’t talk to anyone about it. I was very reluctant.”
Post-natal depression is a very common problem, affecting more than one in every 10 women within a year of giving birth. Symptoms can include a persistent low mood, a lack of energy and feeling tired all the time, difficulty bonding with the baby and frightening thoughts.
Adele has spoken out to show that post-natal depression affects women in different ways.
She said: “My knowledge of postpartum, or post-natal, as we call it in England, is that you don’t want to be with your child. You’re worried you might hurt your child. You’re worried you weren’t doing a good job.”
But Adele says she had no difficulty bonding, in fact she was “obsessed” with Angelo, but she says she feared she “made the worst decision of her life”.
The multi-millionaire, 28, said she found the best way to deal with the condition was to make sure she made time for herself at least once every week while Angelo was young.
Currently touring her 25 album, Adele says she has managed to come up with a balance which works for her family.
She said while Angelo is still her world and she makes sure she fits her work and schedule around him and not the other way round, she does so in a much healthier way now.
The singer said she doesn’t mind any sacrifices she makes for Angelo because she feels such love for him.
She added: “I don’t care if I don’t ever get to do anything for myself again.”
Adele and her partner have now decided the time is right to take the next step in their relationship with a wedding expected next year.
