A 19-year-old man who murdered his friend when he found out that he was dating his mother has been sentenced to life in jail. Lucas Bigley stabbed his mate Matthew Wilson, also 19, to death when he lost control after discovering the relationship.
Bigley has now been found guilty by a jury at Hull Crown Court after a fortnight-long trial, and sentenced to life, with a minimum of 22 years. The jury was told that paramedics received a call in the early hours of the morning on May 28 amid reports that a man was bleeding heavily as a result of stab wounds.
Mr Wilson was found to be bleeding heavily and was bluelighted to hospital where medics worked to try to save him. However, his injuries were just too severe and he died as a result of multiple stab wounds.
Witnesses told police that they believed the culprit was Bigley and he was found pretty much immediately in a nearby house. Police said they found Bigley covered in blood and trying to wash blood from his hands.
After a quick search, the murder weapon was found in the garden of the same house. Following the sentencing, Mr Wilson’s family released a statement saying that they were relieved that the trial was over and satisfied with the verdict. However, they added: “No sentence will ever bring Matt back to us. We too have been handed a life sentence.”
Following Mr Wilson’s death in May, police immediately cordoned off the street where he was stabbed as they gathered evidence and spoke to witnesses. Flowers and notes were left at the scene from devastated loved ones of Mr Wilson. Many paid tribute on social media, with one said: “Such a cruel world my thoughts are with his family. R.I.P fella. God has another great angel by his side.”
