Sony Corp. (NYSE:SNE) PlayStation Portable has made a phenomenal run ever since its release in 2005. The device has been a revolutionary one in the world of handhelds and has given us many games to remember over the years. Even in 2016, many of us still play some of the greatest titles offered by the PlayStation Portable in its time and it gives us a great way to relive those memories. While support for the PlayStation Portable has been shut down, it looks like the PlayStation Store frontend for the PlayStation Portable is also saying goodbye.

According to the support page announcement from Sony Computer Entertainment America, the in-console storefront for the PlayStation Portable is not going to be available starting March 31, 2016. The support page mentions that players are still going to be able to access their download list from the selection in the PSP menu and that the in-game purchases are going to remain live. It adds that PSP content can still be purchased from the PlayStation Store website online but the PSP storefront is not going to be available after the aforementioned date.

This is yet another hint from Sony at the fact that the company is losing interest in the handheld market. While the PSP was successful in its time, the PlayStation Vita and the PlayStation TV mini-console have not been able to achieve the sales numbers expected and it looks like Sony has given up hope on them as well.

The company recently announced that there were no first party titles that were being developed for the PlayStation Vita and most of the existing Vita exclusives have already made their way towards home consoles such as Microsoft Corporation’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 after having an extremely disappointed run as PlayStation Vita exclusives.

With that said, we think that discontinuing the PlayStation Portable store was probably a good idea since there are not many users out there who still use the store to buy stuff for their PlayStation Portable. If you happen to be one of those, you can still do so by using the PlayStation Store website. We all have loved the PlayStation Portable over the years but we think that it is time to finally say goodbye.
